City life could be tough. It's eat or be eaten. It's either you win or you die. For someone as petite as this month's hottie, Arra Pascual, that harsh reality couldn't be any more pronounced. Little girl in a big city. It's the perfect premise for for some Hollywood movie about chasing dreams amidst a sea of real nightmares. 
Consider ourselves blessed then to have a protagonist who's gifted with ambition and drive. She's going to make it, she tells us. And just by looking at her eyes, we could tell that her words are true and pure.

Flashback to Arra's childhood. Coming from a family of lawyers, this beauty from Zamboanga del Norte notes that her upbringing was very conservative. For a free soul such as her, naturally, her rebellious spirit takes over. She decides to follow her dream, which,in her own words, is to become a public figure. It's a goal that she has party fulfilled, seeing as she's now in our pages, and also, a DJ on-the-rise.

Yet, Arra remains hungry. At one point in our conversation with her, we tell her, "You seem pretty feisty." She considers it a big compliment, and thanks us. Yet, she doesn't believe it. She can be tougher, she says. Life still has a lot to teach her, and by her body language and tone, we could tell that she's more than willing to learn. That is where we truly realized that this lady is really something. She's stunning, intoxicating in more ways than one, but what we found sexiest about her is that she's bold enough to continue taking forward steps toward her goal. Will she succeed? She says to check back in 5 years. Odds are though our protagonist won't be one to sink.  

We've known you to be naturally daring, but you seemed a little uncomfortable in the start.
Maybe because I was expecting another model to be here. I think it’s fine if there are two of us, two naked girls walking around. It’s pretty much normal. But if it’s only you walking around naked in a room full of guys, medyo intimidating siya for a girl. Especially ang liit liit ko pa, tapos kayo ang laki nyo pa. 

So you’d be more comfortable if there was another girl naked? Does this imply that you have lesbian tendencies.
Yeah, I’m bi. 

Ah talaga? That’s cool.
It’s really normal if you come from an all-girls school. 

It’s not common for us to have a model readily tell us that they’re bi.
Really? Are you going to tell my parents? Are they going to read this ba? Are you going to publish? Oh, should we not?Ha ha, it’s ok. What the hell, right? 

When did you find out that you were attracted to girls?
In high school, I felt it already. But it was in college that I really became aware that uy this is happening pala. I don’t have to hide in the closet, and that it’s ok, because so many other girls are just like me too. 

How did it feel when you got into college, and that you found out it was ok to be bi?
It felt like an explosion. When you’re very protected, and everyone around you, growing up, is so conservative, you just explode. 

So your upbringing was really conservative?
Yeah, my father and grandfather are lawyers, and everyone in the family expects me to be like them. So, it was tough for me. Maybe that’s why I did a lot of rebelling in my teen years.  

How rebellious were you?
Wow! Ha ha, are we gonna go there? Hmm, I’ll give you an example. Back then, I liked sneaking out with whoever my boyfriend was at the time. And I never got caught! 

Is your tattoo part of your rebellion too?
Sort of, but I just kind of thought that it would be cool to have a tat. My dad found out about it a year after I got it. He didn’t really react to it anymore because I got it when I was already 19. It was pretty much legal then. 

So your folks loosened up when you turned 18?
Well, not really. Not 100%. But from how they were when I was a minor, I could say they’ve changed by around 50%. Ha ha. 

You come from a strict family, a family of lawyers, and now you’re in a field that involves creative expression and freedom. How did that come about?
My grandpa, I know that he was very artistic, and he’s actually a musician at heart. Every Sunday, he would have his entire day for music. And that was his way of you know, expressing himself. Kasi, in the real world, he’s all work. For me siguro, in our generation, we’re all about freedom. We don’t really care what other people will say as long as it makes us happy. That’s simply the generation we’re living in right now. My grandpa would probably do the same if he’s in our generation. Maybe they think that I don’t have a future, but I know I’m going to be somewhere—even if it’s not the path they want for me. 

Where do you see yourself a couple of years from now?
I want to be a public figure. I don’t know what it is yet. I don’t know if I’m going to be a singer, an actress or a DJ. All I know is I’m going to be in the field of entertainment. It’s either I’m a bum or an entertainer. If I could choose what to do forever, I’d choose to be a performer. 

Tell us more about your musical side.
I play the guitar, I can play a little bit of keyboards, and I sing. Doesn’t really sound all that exciting, but I can make my own music and remix my own tracks—my brother taught me how. As a songwriter, my favorite topic would be my past experiences. It’s weird kasi I don’t feel bitter about my exes, but when I write the songs, the emotion is like “oh my God, woah, you sound like such a bitter person.” But it’s not the case really. It’s just my artistic output. 

Who are your influences?  
I like Taylor Swift, Lykke Li. Who else? Metric, System of a Down. Minus The Bear, I'm such a fan of theirs. I love music. I also listen to everything from old-school hip-hop to the new ones.

That's a very diverse selection.
I don't know. Maybe I got it from my dad, who's also into music. You can't really box me into one genre, I simply like all kinds of music. I even like trippy songs, even if I'm not under something. Ha ha. I'm just naturally like that. 

Of course, there must be some music that you can't stand
Maybe jeepney music. Filipinos are so much better than. I don't know why some people settle for that. Our culture is so rich. Maybe it's the lack of budget rin in the music industry or something, that's why we tend to not accept development. I mean, we only listen to revivals, remix--we tend to stick to that. 

Would you say that one of your goals is to push the envelope as a musician?I know it sounds ideal but I hope we're going to get somewhere some day. Shoot for the stars, land in the skies. 

Is it a turn off if a guy has bad taste in music?
Not really. I could just influence him! Ha ha. 

On the other hand, is it a plus if a guy's a good musician? 
Definitely! If you're going to make me choose between an actor and a musician, I'd go for the musician. Musicians touch my soul eh, because music, it really comes from the heart. 

What's your definition of a good musician then? 
He has to write good songs. I admire good lyricists, such as Brandon Boyd of Incubus and Rico Blanco.

 

You grew up in Zamboanga. What makes you proud of your roots?
Siguro, it's how dignified we are. My family pretty much raised me well despite the fact that I was such a stubborn kid or a bad girl. Ha ha. That's the one thing I'm proud of--we're dignified people. 

Do you truly consider yourself a bad girl?
Trust me, I did so many things just to prove to other people that "No, I'm okay, I'm tough, I'm a bad girl." But ako pa rin yung talo in the end, so I don't do that anymore. Ha ha. I've toned down a bit now, and more level-headed. I don't want to seem dramatic, but I think every girl goes through a phase like that.  

We do sense a certain toughness coming from you. We think you're feisty.
Feisty? Me? Ha ha. Maybe that's what people see, but trust me, I am so not feisty. I think I need more experience to be feisty. Maybe it's just the way I look, or the makeup! It's the make-up right? Ha ha. 

Ok, if not feisty, what then?
Ha ha. Please don't ask me to describe myself! It's hard. The last time I had to do describe myself was for a slumbook back in high school. 

What did you write there? 
Hmm, maybe complex. I do remember taking a personality test before, and I'm supposed to be an INFJ type. Which stands for, introverted, judging...

Does N stand for narcissistic?
It doesn't! I'm not narcissistic, although I wish I were a little. Siguro, right now I'm still young. I can't say I love myself fully, but I'm contented with what I am right now. Told you I'm complicated. Sometimes though I envy other girls because they know who they are. They're all like "This is me, bitch." Ha ha. It's like they're so sure of themselves, and are as confident as beauty queens. There's no insecurity there. 

Would you say that you're still in the process of conquering your insecurities? You do scream of confidence when you're in front of the camera.  
Yeah, I guess when it comes to achievements, especially. I want to achieve a lot of things, so I guess that's where some of the insecurity stem from. I can't say that I'm successful yet, all I know is that it's still a bit of a climb from here on out. Just like how it is for most other girls out there in the industry too. Maybe 5 years from now, that's when I can say that I've accomplished something. Right now, I have nothing to actually brag about. 

Come on now, you're a DJ, so don't be too harsh on yourself.
Last year I was so, so bad as a DJ. I had to strive, practice more and work really hard to improve. There were times that I didn't eat just so I could practice my playlist for three freaking days. That's how it is because you have to familiarize yourself with the songs. The playlists I had then had around 100 songs. To familiarize yourself you have to listen to all of them, and each song lasts about 9 minutes. And that's just listening to it. You have to also know when to enter and...anyway, I'm getting too technical.

But that was how I practiced every day. I was so bad before that I felt like I was making people cry and going "what's this girl doing here?" I got gigs because I was a girl. But now, I can say that I can get gigs because I'm good at what I do. Hard work does pay off. Just don't stop. Whatever it is you're doing, work hard for it, and you're going to get it.

What's the best part about being a DJ, what are the perks?
I'm the brand ambassador now of Pioneer Philippines, and they let me use a lot of their stuff like headphones, the DDJT-1, and the CDJ-2000. Those things get me pretty excited! Not everyone gets this chance. I just have to learn, work for it, and now it's paying off. 

Describe a night partying to your set.
It's a mash of electro, triphop and house music. Right now, I also inject a few top 40's because people like listening to those. I'm learning dubstep now too. 

Do guys get intimidated by your DJ chops?
Really? Is that how guys think now? Ha ha. I don't think so. If they are, they shouldn't be. Why should they be intimidated? 

Most people unwind going to the bars and clubs. But since you're a DJ, you must have other ways to relax? 
I just play the guitar, stay at home, watch DVDs, fiddle around with my computer--really boring things. People might think "Ooh, she's so adventurous, she's so exciting" but really, I just listen to music, and that's what makes me feel alive. Hmm, what else? I like working out too. 

When I was younger, when my dad had to pay for everything, I loved shopping. But now that I have to budget my own money, make my own money, I've become more of a homebody. I love playing videogames. I have an Xbox, and I play a lot of Saint's Row. I love Saint's Row, I swear. You have your gang, your cars, you can just steal from people. You can wish life was that easy: you can just go to the mafia, go missions for them, and if you fuck up, you can just restart. I can play it for a week without going out. Ha ha.
 
Although, nasira ngayon yung Xbox ko, nag-three red lights. Kaya walang videogames ngayon sa bahay. And I don't think I can get my Xbox fixed anymore, so I'm planning to get a new one and Kinect. Kinect's so cool daw. I've never tried it, but they say it's so cool, so that's what I'm saving up for.

Cool, a gamer girl! So no outdoor adventures for you then? If I'm in Zamboanga, I like being outdoors. I make it a point to be there at the beach, and at my Mom's farm. I like being outdoors when I'm there. But here in Manila? No thanks. Once you step outside, it's pollution right away! 

What else keeps you occupied?
I focus on things that are going to help me in the long run. Voice lessons. Working out. For gimiks and shopping, wala muna. 

Does that mean you don't have time for a relationship right now? 
Not right now. 

Even short term ones?
I would not go for a relationship if I know it's short term, because that's just useless. Kasi if I'm going to be in a relationship with someone, it's not just for companionship. You're investing time and emotion, so you have to make it count. He should be potential husband material. 

"Potential husband material." How can you tell if someone has it?
I don't have the right definition for it. Pero siguro, if I see it, if I feel it, then I'd know. Right now, I'm clueless. If i get to be with him for a long time, that's when I'd know. 

What do you find attractive?
In general, I like moreno and morena types. Not too white, not too dark. I'm just really attracted to tan-colored people. Phsyically, for guys, I like it when they're fit. It says a lot about a guy, and how they handle themselves. I know the discipline it takes to maintain a fitness regimen. I read somewhere that first you have to discipline you body, and your emotions, and then the mind will follow.
